Today in Wildlife Ecology Part 2

These past few posts have been sent in from my phone- the problem is I am limited to 1000 characters- so I didnt explain the picture.
To solve any confusion you might have about the picture of the skull in the last post (bonus points to those of you who knew it was a beaver skull)
The reason I picked this skull out of all the other animals is beacause I am facinated by their orange teeth. I realize that beavers need their large teeth to cut down trees- but why are they orange? Do beavers share the same favorite color as I do? Or is it primarily to have a nice looking grill to impress the lady beavers?
I find it almost as interesting as their hobby of cutting down trees to dam off their own private pond. It has a very humanlike feel to it. I love that they selfishly decide to either 1) make their own pond by damming off a river/steam into a lake or 2) make their own private island home in the middle of the lake. These little fellas really know how to create nice real estate!

Today in Wildlife Ecology...

So I realized this morning I have not made it super clear why I am out at camp so early. Well this is partially because until recently- I was not so sure myself!
Well as it turns out, I am out here with 2 other counselors (yes a grand total of 3!) and we are spending a week learning about nature, animals, fire and water ecology. After this crash course to become outdoor geniouses (I might have misspelled that- but I'm leaving it for irony) local highschools come out and spend 2 1/2 days learning under our guidance to become crocodile dundees.
So from now until May 30th- thats what I will be doing! When the actual summer starts, more counselors will be showing up (16 total) and then campers will be arrive with more of a religious centered focus. I'm sure we will still teach a few things about wildlife- but until that time I will simply enjoy learning as much as i can about the facinating nature that surrounds me.
Fun Fact: poop is known by wildlife experts as "scat". (Which is like one of my favorite things to say when talking about animals)

Breakfast just may become as important to me as it should be...

Who says camp food is bad? The amazing food you see before you is french toast stuffed with strawberry cream cheese with whip cream and a strawberry sauce on top- served with a side of bacon!
Now I know it is pretty sad that I only made it to the 3rd post before putting up a picture of food- but I am trying to space out the nature pictures with other ones to keep the interest level high.

Also- I'm going to relate back to this post with a future post about nature and available resources. (are you curious as to how I am going to tie them together? because I sure am!)

Washed out beaver Dam

A beautiful overlook of what used to be a pond held back by a beaver dam. Turns out it was washed out and the beavers decided not to rebuild. Its sorta sad in a way. Maybe we could set up some sort of relief fund and ask other countries to help us help the beavers?!
I'll look into it...

Hello everyone!

I thought I would take this opportunity in my first post ever in this new blog to explain the name of my blog, because I think it is very clever. Its a combination of the words "what" "the" and "hecht". Almost as if to say "What the heck is this blog about?" which I'm sure you will all find yourselves asking from time to time.

Well as some of you may know, I will be spending my summer in the black hills out by Custer, SD working at a bible camp. The past two days have been so amazing and breath taking, that I decided I need to set up a blog to attempt to show it to some of you through photos (and if you're lucky I might even attempt a witty remark here and there).

The other thing this might be used for is for posting any other hobbies-interesting anecdotes- or delicious food that I think the world needs to read about.

Anywho, It is about time to wrap this post up, so that I can figure out how to use my phone to post pictures!

-Peace
